About Levittown, New York
The Suburb That Started Them All
Levittown is the most famous suburb in America: the community Levitt & Sons built on Hempstead Plains potato fields starting in 1947, the prototype for postwar suburbia nationwide. Today about 51,000 residents (ZIP 11756) make it one of Nassau County’s largest hamlets, in the Town of Hempstead.
The Housing Stock
The original Cape Cods and ranches went up by the thousands, and almost eighty years later nearly every one has been expanded, dormered, or rebuilt in its own way, which gives Levittown’s streets a variety their builders never imagined. It remains one of Long Island’s most accessible communities for first-time homeowners.

The Levitts planned recreation into the community, and their village greens and community pools still anchor the neighborhoods, along with ballfields and the parks strung along the Wantagh Parkway corridor.
Schools
The hamlet is served by the Levittown Union Free School District, with Division Avenue and General Douglas MacArthur high schools, and by the Island Trees district on its eastern side, a name older than the Levitts’ arrival.
Location
Levittown sits mid-county: East Meadow to the west, Hicksville to the north, Bethpage to the east, and Wantagh and North Wantagh below. Hempstead Turnpike runs through its heart, and the Wantagh State Parkway carries it south to the beaches.
