About Massapequa, New York
Massapequa's Community
Massapequa is a South Shore hamlet of roughly 21,700 residents (ZIP 11758) in the Town of Oyster Bay, with the adjacent Village of Massapequa Park adding another 17,000. The name comes from the Massapequa band who lived along these shores, and the modern community took shape in the postwar boom, when farmland became one of Long Island’s signature suburbs almost overnight. Famous natives include Jerry Seinfeld and the Baldwin brothers.
Housing and Neighborhoods
Housing is classic South Shore: capes, colonials, splits, and expanded ranches on tidy lots. South of Merrick Road the character changes, as waterfront sections like Nassau Shores, Harbor Green, and Biltmore Shores run along canals opening onto South Oyster Bay, with docks behind the houses.
Education
The Massapequa Union Free School District, anchored by Massapequa High School and Berner Middle School, carries a long record in academics and athletics, and Friday nights in the fall belong to the Chiefs.
Parks and Recreation
The Massapequa Preserve is the standout: a 400-plus-acre greenbelt of ponds, streams, and woods running north from Merrick Road, with the Bethpage Bikeway threading through it. Marjorie R. Post Community Park and John J. Burns Town Park add pools, courts, and ballfields, and Jones Beach State Park is a short drive over the causeway.
Location and Getting Around
Massapequa borders Seaford to the west, Massapequa Park and the Suffolk line at Amityville to the east, and Farmingdale to the north. The LIRR’s Babylon Branch stops at Massapequa station, and Sunrise Highway, Merrick Road, and the Southern State Parkway carry traffic east and west.
