A South Shore Hamlet
Merrick is a hamlet of about 22,000 residents (ZIP 11566) in the Town of Hempstead, its name, like Merrick Road’s, coming from the Merokee band who lived here first. With North Merrick above Sunrise Highway, it forms one of the South Shore’s most established communities.
Homes and Neighborhoods
Merrick’s blocks range from grand colonials near the water to postwar capes and splits north of Merrick Road. The south Merrick peninsulas reach into the bay, where streets end at canals and open water views toward Jones Beach.
Schools
Merrick’s elementary district feeds the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, with Sanford H. Calhoun High School on Merrick Avenue among its campuses, a system that consistently ranks with Long Island’s best.
Parks and the Waterfront
Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve is Merrick’s signature green space: a hilltop preserve built where a landfill once stood, now laced with trails and lookouts over the marshes and the skyline. Merrick Road Park adds golf and ballfields along the water.
