Community and Population
Wantagh is a hamlet of roughly 18,600 residents (ZIP 11793) on Nassau County’s South Shore, in the Town of Hempstead. It calls itself the “Gateway to Jones Beach,” and the nickname is literal: the Wantagh State Parkway runs straight from the hamlet’s spine down the causeway to Jones Beach State Park and the Jones Beach Theater.
Housing and Neighborhoods
Most of Wantagh was built in the postwar decades, and it shows in the best way: block after block of well-kept capes, splits, colonials, and expanded ranches on tidy lots. South of Merrick Road, the Mandalay section runs along canals that open onto the bay, with docks behind the houses. North of Sunrise Highway, the streets grow quieter as they approach North Wantagh and the Levittown line.
Schools
The hamlet is served by the Wantagh Union Free School District, anchored by Wantagh High School, with a long record in academics and athletics that keeps the district near the top of families’ reasons for moving here.
Parks, Beaches and Recreation
Wantagh Park spreads along the East Bay with a pool complex, marina, and waterfront trails, and Twin Lakes Preserve and Mill Pond thread green space through the middle of the hamlet. The Wantagh Museum keeps the community’s history in the preserved 1885 Long Island Rail Road station house. And the Atlantic is a straight shot south: Jones Beach’s boardwalk and bandshell are a ten-minute drive.
Getting Around
The LIRR’s Babylon Branch stops at Wantagh station, and Sunrise Highway, Merrick Road, and the Wantagh State Parkway carry local traffic in every direction. Wantagh borders Seaford to the east and Bellmore to the west.

Wantagh runs on Little League seasons, school events, and summer weekends that start with beach traffic on the parkway. Wantagh Avenue and the Sunrise Highway corridor hold the hamlet’s shops and restaurants, while the residential blocks stay quiet, green, and family-first.
